Mayor's Priorities for the NEXT Hamilton:
3. Rapid Transit
Metrolinx and a Regional Transportation Plan: While a board member on Metrolinx, the regional transportation planning authority, I advanced Hamilton's local and regional transportation needs in the context of the new Regional Transportation Plan. To date, we have increased our immediate express bus schedule on the B-Line (McMaster-Eastgate) and will be starting up the A-Line (Waterfront-Airport) to promote a more effective transit system on our two major rapid transit corridors. There is still more to accomplish.
Regional Rail: As one of the early initiatives of Metrolinx, a GO/VIA Train platform will be constructed at James Street North to allow for all-day, two-way train service to our city. This is consistent with the need for more GO Train service as well as the conclusions of the VIA Rail Taskforce and City Council which endorsed James North as the preferred VIA Rail location in Hamilton. Additionally, this regional rail node will connect with the A-Line rapid transit corridor. Future expansion will also include peak GO Train Service to Stoney Creek.

Light Rail Transit: Hamilton is also placing a greater focus on efficient transportation as we move closer to the installation of a rapid transit system. After thorough analysis and overwhelming public support, Hamilton City Council has decided that Light Rail Transit (LRT) is our future. LRT is transformational – it’s about rejuvenating a city, promoting growth and re-urbanization. In cities throughout North America and Europe, light rail attracts new investment, generates additional tax revenue and creates jobs. A light rail transit system is becoming a staple of a modern city and, with funding from the provincial government and the strong support of residents and industry, we will create a transit system suitable for a 21st century Hamilton.
