The City of Hamilton’s Public Works Department has initiated The Gore Master Plan Study to revitalize Hamilton’s Gore area, bounded by James and Catharine Streets, the north edge of Gore Park, and the southern sidewalk along the south leg of King Street East.
The recent Transit Terminal Study resulted in approval of a new downtown Multi-modal Transit facility, which allows for the relocation of HSR buses from the south side of King Street east to the north side of King Street east.
Removal of buses from the south leg of King Street east provides an opportunity to blend this portion of roadway with pedestrian zones in that area, such as Gore Park and existing store-front sidewalks. In recognition of the mutual dependency and influence between the south leg of King Street east and Gore Park, Public Works will undertake The Gore Master Plan Study. This study will pay special attention to the site’s extraordinary physical identity, and its presence in the collective psyche of Hamilton’s people. Respect will be given to the Gore’s significant history of almost 200 years of attendance as a physical and psychological anchor in Hamilton.
"Historically, the Gore was a popular social gathering place, a hub of retail and commerce," said Mayor Fred Eisenberger. "We need to re-establish the Gore as a hub once again, making it a place where all citizens will point with pride when they think of downtown. To do this, we require a rethinking of how we approach downtown - its strengths and potential. The Revitalization of the Gore Park area, including the creation of a pedestrian plaza, is part of this process."
A recent review of the 2001 Downtown Transportation Master Plan recommended the closure of the south leg of King Street East, for pedestrianization, to begin as a pilot project. The purpose of the pilot project is to gauge the success of pedestrianizing the area by sampling the effects before implementing the permanent closure. Timing of the pilot project is tied to the buses being relocated and results of The Gore Master Plan Study.
“Stakeholder and community consultation is integral to the process,” said Scott Stewart, General Manager of Public Works. “We will be consulting with general site users, transit users, the public, business community members and other interested stakeholders to develop a comprehensive and collaborative plan to revitalize the Gore.”
Upon completion of The Gore Master Plan, a recommendation report will be advanced to Council. With Council approval, implementation would be scheduled for the year the buses leave the south leg of King Street east, tentatively set for 2010.
