Have your say on transit planning for Hamilton at Metrolinx public meeting
October 28, 2008

HAMILTON, ON – October 28, 2008 – Metrolinx will hold a public meeting this week in Hamilton to consult with the Hamilton community about its draft transportation plan, The Big Move; Transforming Transportation in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. Metrolinx is seeking valuable input from the Hamilton community on this 25-year, $50 billion transportation plan which includes significant investment in Hamilton’s transit system.

The draft Metrolinx Plan identifies four rapid transit corridors within Hamilton, as well as improved GO Train services. The rapid transit corridors and their ranking for Provincial funding priority, according to the draft plan are as follows:
· B-Line - Eastgate to MacMaster University, Metrolinx’s top 15 priorities (15-year plan)
· A-Line - Downtown to the Airport, 15-year plan
· T-Line - Hamilton Mohawk (Mohawk Road to Ancaster Meadowlands), 25-year plan
· S-Line - Centennial Rymal (Eastgate Square to Ancaster Business Park), beyond 25-year plan

City of Hamilton staff are continuing to undertake comprehensive rapid transit plans and studies in anticipation for the final announcement in November. Metrolinx has not yet confirmed whether rapid transit in Hamilton will be Light Rail Transit (LRT) or Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) but they are seeking feedback from the general public through this public consultation process. The final plan is expected to be released in late November 2008 with implementation to begin soon after.

Hamilton’s Rapid Transit Team will also be available at the Metrolinx Public Meeting to share the details about the City’s rapid transit plans for Hamilton and gather valuable stakeholder feedback.
