Mayor Eisenberger meets with U.S. Steel executives on plant idling in Hamilton and Nanticoke
Hamilton, ON - Mayor Fred Eisenberger met for more than an hour today with top U.S. Steel executives to discuss the company’s Hamilton and Nanticoke operations. U.S. Steel Executive Vice President and COO John Goodish expressed his concern about the current economy in North America, making specific reference to decreased demand for autos and durable goods also pointing the slow down in construction markets on both sides of the border. “I requested this meeting to get some clarification from the decision makers at U.S. Steel,” says Mayor Eisenberger. “I have been assured that U.S. Steel Canada is very much invested in Hamilton and its primary interest is making it through this global economic downturn and getting back to production.”
Mr. Goodish also assured Mayor Eisenberger that once consumer confidence and demand is restored, U.S. Steel would be increasing capacity throughout its North American operations. In addition, Mr. Goodish told the Mayor that U.S. Steel has never walked away from its pension obligations and considers its employees as one of the company’s most important assets, pointing to the company’s Hamilton division as a key component of its North American operations.
Mayor Eisenberger presented many of the concerns raised by the local unions and will be speaking with USWA 1005 executives about his discussions with U.S. Steel executives, who have agreed to an ongoing dialogue with the Mayor and City of Hamilton in the coming weeks and months..
