For Immediate Release
On behalf of the people of Hamilton, I wish to extend our deepest sympathy to the families of the victims, and those injured in Monday’s earthquake.
The people of L’Aquila hold a special place in the hearts of the 70,000 Hamiltonians of Italian descent and especially to the 20,000 from the Abruzzo Region. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of them.
Our cities are connected by friendship and the bond of family. On the evening of April 7, 2009, our community gathered together to establish a committee dedicated to assisting the people of L’Aquila. Prominent citizens of Abruzzese origin, led by former Mayor Larry DiIanni, his brother Angelo, the Committee Chair and Joseph Mancinelli will be coordinating our local efforts.
We have offered the people of the affected cities, through their Mayors, our assistance in their rescue efforts. Letters of support have been sent to the towns of Valle Peligna (these include Sulmona, Pratola Peligna, Introdacqua, Pettorano sul Gizio, Villetta Barrea, Pacentro, Gagliano Aterno and Castiglione a Casauria) and L’Aquila.
In the weeks ahead, as these communities begin to rebuild, we would like them to know that their friends and family in Hamilton, Canada are here to help.
I will keep the community informed of the work and progress of our local Committee. At the appropriate time, I look forward to coordinating with all concerned as to how we may be of assistance to the people of L’Aquila.
While the task before the people of L’Aquila is large, we want them to know that they are not alone.
