City recreation facilities receive $6.8 million boost from federal and provincial governments

Hamilton, ON -  The federal and provincial governments announced that six City of Hamilton recreation facility projects will receive a total of $6.8 million through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) Program (Ontario) and the Ontario Recreation Program (Ontario REC). The funding, which the city applied for in May, covers two thirds of the total cost of each project, with the city paying the remaining third, per the funding agreement:

  • Carlisle Arena retrofit - $1,100,000 (RInC) + $550,000 (city) = $1,650,000
  • Chedoke Twin Pad floor replacement - $1,100,000 (RInC) + $550,000 (city) = $1,650,000
  • Inch Park Arena retrofit - $1,100,000 (RInC) + $550,000 (city) = $1,650,000
    Inch Park Pool retrofit - $1,333,334 (RInC) + $666,667 (city) = $2,000,001
  • Rosedale Arena retrofit - $1,100,000 (RInC) + $550,000 (city) = $1,650,000
  • Turner Park sports field lighting and washroom facility - $1,100,000 (RInC) + $550,000 (city) = $1,650,000

    Total = $10,250,001

Construction will begin over the months ahead with all projects slated for completion as per the federal funding guidelines by March 31, 2011. "This infrastructure funding means a great deal to Hamilton," said Mayor Fred Eisenberger. "It will give our construction industry a boost and allow us to enhance our facilities so we can best serve the recreation needs of residents."

The YMCA of Hamilton/Burlington, YWCA Hamilton, the Hamilton Region Conservation Authority, Marie Curie Sklodowska Association and Redeemer University College also received recreation infrastructure funding through the program. The RInC Program is part of Canada's Economic Action Plan, the federal government's plan to ensure a quick recovery from the current economic downturn. It was established to support communities and create jobs through upgrades and improvements to recreational infrastructure and will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period.
