Hamilton and Metrolinx kick-off new express transit route
August 31, 2009

HAMILTON, ON– As part of an ongoing commitment to improve Hamilton’s public transit system and better serve riders, the City of Hamilton and Metrolinx celebrated the implementation of Hamilton’s new express transit route, known as the A-line, which will run north-south, operating substantially on Upper James Street and serving key destinations including Hamilton Airport, Mohawk College, GO Transit bus and rail station on Hunter Street and the Central Business District.

Funding to start up the new A-line was provided by Metrolinx through the $29.8 million ‘Quick Win’ funding contribution, committed in March 2008.  This funding contribution also includes 18 new 60-foot hybrid articulated buses to enhance the City’s transit fleet and bus capacity improvements for the very successful existing east-west B-line.  With the addition of these 18 new buses, the City will have a complement of 25 hybrid articulated buses in its transit fleet this September which will all be wheelchair-accessible.

“Metrolinx recognized Hamilton’s planned growth and recommended investment in public transit”, said Rob MacIsaac, Chair of Metrolinx. “This Quick Win project offers Hamiltonians expanded, comfortable service, providing them with a better option to leave their car at home and take transit instead.”

Mayor Eisenberger was joined by local MPs and MPPs, Metrolinx Chair Rob MacIsaac, members of Council and other City of Hamilton and Metrolinx representatives at the event this morning which took place at the Hamilton Airport.

“These significant investments are another positive example of the solid commitment from Metrolinx to enhance Hamilton’s public transit system,” said Mayor Fred Eisenberger.  “These improvements will result in more frequent service, more capacity and more comfort for our riders.  We look forward to working with Metrolinx in the coming months to implement future transit projects in Hamilton.”

“This new wave of public transportation will give our community greatly improved services,” said Ted McMeekin, MPP Ancaster-Dundas-Flamborough-Aldershot.  “Metrolinx partnering with the City will ensure a future of fast, reliable transportation our citizens can rely on. Congratulations!”

“Hamilton’s public transit system is a priority for our government,” said Sophia Aggelonitis, MPP for Hamilton Mountain. “These significant investments show our government’s commitment to fast, efficient and accessible public transportation for all Hamiltonians.”

The A-line route, which begins service on September 8th, will be an express, limited-stop service, similar in design to the existing B-line.  It will operate on weekdays during peak periods, operating at 30 minute headways.  Over time, the A-line will expand to provide all-day service, operating at more frequent headways.
