CITY OF HAMILTON ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT UPDATE
Hamilton, ON – October 2009
The City of Hamilton has been honoured with the following awards over the year. The Mayor would like to thank all staff in the Economic Development Department for all the hard work they have put into this achievement.
E&B Data Social Media Ranking:
Hamilton ranks third amongst Canada's 20 top municipalities in terms of the use of social media and the web for attracting investment. E&B's study measured how well Canadian cities' economic development agencies are marketing their regions to potential investors via the web. The uses of various Web 2.0 tools were assessed and the availability of relevant information sources for site selectors on the agency's site were considered as a part of the ranking process.
Real Estate Investment Network
The Real Estate Investment Network has named Hamilton the second-best place in Ontario to buy a house or invest in commercial property. "Known formerly as a hard-working steel town, Hamilton has transformed itself into a diverse economy," says the Top Ontario Investment Towns report released today.
Site Selection Magazine
Hamilton was ranked seventh among Canadian metropolitan areas in attracting new and expanded corporate facilities. Site Selection Magazine, a North American publication aimed at corporate real estate executives, tallied 13 corporate projects between June 2008 and May 2009. The rankings are based on projects per capita, investment per capita and job creation.
One Power Launches in Hamilton
OnePower is a containment unit used for major construction projects and emergency relief efforts. Created from sea-shipping containers, it's designed to store items such as welding stations, HVAC units, water purification systems, air compressors and power washers. Fully loaded -- including the engine, computer system and a full diesel-fuel tank -- the unit weighs approximately 10,433 kilograms and can be controlled from anywhere in the world via a Wi-Fi connection through devices such as a BlackBerry. All units include a 200-plus-horsepower Tier 3 Caterpillar engine, which is designed to reduce emissions. In addition, a centralized computer system can cut power to a unit if it's been left idle for a prescribed period of time -- much like a screensaver on a computer. The OnePower is a cost-effective, made-in-Hamilton solution designed to remedy the lack of accessible and sufficient power sources that construction projects and emergency relief efforts require, said OnePower president Vince DiCristofaro. OnePower Corp., established in November, has 15 full-time employees. Of the company's 30 parts suppliers, 18 are from Hamilton.
Mayor Fred Eisenberger said; “We are all very proud of these achievements. The awards are an indication that we are heading in the right direction and I am confident that we will maintain momentum as we look towards a brighter future for our city.”
