Southern Ontario wins 2015 PANAM bid!
November 09, 2009

The Pan American Sports Organization has announced that the Southern Ontario bid has been awarded the 2015 Pan Am Games / Para Pan Am Games. Joined by some 75 local Pan Am supporters at the Parks Canada Discovery Centre, Hamilton Mayor Fred Eisenberger was thrilled by the news from Guadalajara, Mexico.

“I am overjoyed; this is a great win for the City of Hamilton, for Ontario, for Canada,” Eisenberger said. The Pan Am Games will provide a unique opportunity for Hamilton to renew major sport facilities giving Hamiltonians a multi-purpose stadium, a 50 metre swimming pool, and an international-calibre velodrome to enjoy for generations to come.

“The $60 million investment will allow the City of Hamilton to develop new sport infrastructure worth more than $225 million in partnership with upper levels of government and private sector investors that the City simply could not afford on its own,” said Mayor Eisenberger.

The Mayor also pointed out that the bid was successful primarily due to the involvement of local, provincial and federal representatives. “I congratulate Premier McGuinty, Bid Chair David Peter Peterson and Chief Operating Officer Jagoda Pike, along with Trish Chant-Sehl, and Canadian Sport Minister Gary Lunn for a job well done.”

“I’d like to offer my personal thanks to members of City Council, City staff, local board members David Braley and Patrick Dillon, the Mayor’s Advisory Committee and the entire bid team for an outstanding job representing all of us in this bid,” Mayor Eisenberger said. Work for the Games is directly linked to the City’s strategic plan and will consider ways to leverage the Games with plans for rapid transit, waterfront development, downtown renewal, economic development, in addition to tourism and sport and recreation.
