Mayor Fred Eisenberger’s Statement on Mosque incident

Hamilton, ON - On behalf of Council and myself, we are deeply saddened that the New Year began with a violent attack directed at Hamilton’s Muslim community. An attack on any one of our many communities is an attack on all of us. When one of us comes under threat – our collective resolve is to work together, to strengthen bridges and build an even stronger community.

Hamiltonians are outraged, deploring this and any act of prejudice and hatred. “In a world darkened by ethnic conflicts that tear nations apart”, former U.S President Bill Clinton said, “Canada stands as a model of how people of different cultures can live and work together in peace, prosperity, and mutual respect.  In Hamilton we value and recognize the strength of our diversity and together we stand against hatred and ignorance and together we stand up for our community and our diversity.

We have recently entered the Muslim month of Muharram – the start of the Muslim calendar. Like our new year, let this be an opportunity to start fresh and with resolve to continue on the path of an inclusive Hamilton. This incident reinforces the important work of the Hamilton's Centre for Civic Inclusion to promote equity and inclusivity in our community.

Together, we will build for the future of all Hamiltonians – making this the best place in Canada to raise a child, promote innovation, engage citizens and provide diverse economic opportunities.
