This is a great day for Hamilton and proves that the steel industry continues to be a major part of our economy, now and in the future. With this acquisition, Max Aicher (North America) Inc. will be making a major re-investment is Hamilton’s north end, turning two aging facilities into state-of-the-art advanced manufacturing operations.
It will also mean several hundred good jobs and increased prosperity for the entire community. This acquisition is also significant because, with this announcement, U.S. Steel Canada Inc. has re-affirmed its continued commitment to its core operations in Hamilton and Nanticoke. U.S. Steel has demonstrated that it is committed to our community and that will mean jobs and prosperity now and in the future.
As Mayor, I value the excellent relationship I have with U.S. Steel leadership in Hamilton and was pleased to expand that relationship when I met top leaders at U.S. Steel’s head office in Pittsburgh in March. I am now looking forward to working closely with the leadership of Max Aicher as we welcome the company to the community.
Today’s announcement is the culmination of months of behind-the-scenes work led by the city’s Neil Everson and his economic development team. Today’s announcement is further proof that Hamilton's "seamless customer service " delivery model of business development is now a highly efficient and effective unit. This is yet another great example of the return on investment that Council made in increasing the budget and resources to our economic development efforts. Senior staff from Public Works, Legal Services, Planning and Economic Development have worked collaboratively with the respective companies and their project teams leading to today’s great result.
I also want to recognize the good work of local law firm Scarfone Hawkins LLP and in particular Joseph Speranzini and James Mahler who have worked tirelessly on this file. Hamilton is building momentum with a growing economy, more jobs, and more prosperity for everyone.
